From one Thomas to another….with the main consistency being that it’s an awkward bugger to spell and say. Is it Thomas Butchers, Thomas the Butchers, Thomases Butcher, Thomas’s’ Butchers, Thomas’ Butchers, Thomases the Butcher oh my head’s gone….for a veritable wordsmith this ties me in knots.
Unlike Barrow, you’ll not get a meat and potato pie in deepest Wiltshire, ’tis all steak around here. I actually came here looking for an elusive Devizes pie but I’m not sure such a thing is commercially available given my conversations with the Wiltshire Tourist Board (I don’t just knock this together you know…..)
They do a nice Gala pie however and a single steak and stilton which is what I plumped for. A flaky, oblong shaped crust packed with tough, chewy meat (may be a bit of Devizes pie style calves brain in there?) and of course an impressively pungent Stilton flavour to it.
It’s well worth chomping on one of these beauties whilst admiring Malmesbury’s marvellous abbey and low arched bridges over the river.
There’s another 313 pies like the above featured in Life of Pies. If you want to order a copy of the book for just £9.99 plus postage please click this link to order www.lifeofpies.co.uk/buy
