I recently wrote an article for excellent Barnsley fanzine West Stand Bogs all about pies and my forthcoming book. It was the least I can do after it’s editor tipped me off some time last year about Percy’s Pies.
A small butcher situated in the South Yorkshire town of Jump, Percy’s is a local institution. Enough of the pre-amble though: they sell pork pies for SIXTY FIVE PENCE!!!
And if you’re lucky like me, you get a free piece of dried blood in your change!
I spoke a couple of days ago about hidden treasures and this place certainly ticks all the boxes. It’s never changed for twenty years (nor has the price) and whether you genuinely believe that things were better in the olden days or not, there’s a fairly strong case that pies aren’t what they used to be. Yet this one is!
It’s a glorious bundle of spicy sausage meat encased in molten jelly which spills out at uncontrollable levels. Served still warm from the oven it is an enticing, appetising, rich experience and the pie is no mean size given it’s extremely competitive price.
Mind you, I could have eaten another. But then you could always eat another one of these pies for they are a little bobby dazzler, as they say in Barnsley (probably)
There’s another 313 pies like the above featured in Life of Pies. If you want to order a copy of the book for just £9.99 plus postage please click this link to order www.lifeofpies.co.uk/buy
You’ll receive it in as soon as I’ve finished my pie!
