Barrow remains a good source of pies with many decent independent outlets. It’s all a matter of taste, of course, but I would still put the well-known (via ‘Life of Pies’ and the Hairy Bikers among others) Greens Pie Shop as my favourites.
The new kid on the block is increasing in popularity, however. ‘Deli.sh’ (sic) on Crellin Street is just behind McDonalds on Dalton Road and opposite Portland Walk, the main shopping streets. It is particularly popular with younger people. Website: http://www.delishbarrow.com/
The normal pie offerings are Meat and Potato (£1.70) and Steak and Potato (£1.80) – both pictured – together with Steak and Kidney (£1.80) Chicken, Leek, Mushroom and Gammon (£1.80) Cheese and Onion (£1.70) and a tasty Breakfast Pie (£1.80).
Come late November there is the much-anticipated release of the Christmas Pie (£2.00) which runs through December and is very popular. It looks better in real life than in the photo and tastes very good. In a pie case there are a couple of mini roast potatoes, a sausage, stuffing sitting on a gravy sauce including carrot and parsnips together with turkey pieces. Getting all that in a standard pie case is a work of art. To be recommended.
Off the pie topic, a word of praise for their Scotch egg made with Cumberland Sausage and offered with or without black pudding in the mixture together with their sweet tray bakes.
Deli.sh now do the catering at Holker Street, home of Barrow AFC, which until this season has lacked a pie offer, shameful really! Three pies (M&P, C&O and the chicken) are normally on offer but a little dearer than in the town shop. Fair enough for the location and the trouble of setting up the sales in a remote location. I believe they also do the hospitality package catering which is well-received and offered in newly refurbished rooms.
Whoops! You’ve missed the Christmas postage but you can still pick up a copy of Life of Pies from the Pie Shop here for £4.99 with FREE POSTAGE for the next few days
Merry Xmas to all pie lovers everywhere!
